Thailand is a country with a long and rich history. Thailand is also one of those countries which have many traditions which modern times fortunately have not affected. Thailand is renowned for its unique culture that has been notorious around the globe. Thai culture is especially well known for its distinctiveness. It is well worth noting that Thai culture has traditionally been handed down from one generation to the next.

When you speak of Thailand, instantly a picture of people with small eyes and happy smiling faces appear before you. They have the typical south-east asian look. However, their ways, their way of speaking, their beliefs, and their culture are a symbol of their true identity.

Thailand mostly comprises of people who speak Tai language. Tai speaking people are spread over Central Thai, the Northeastern Thai, the Northern Thai, and the Southern Thai. Central Thai is the area where one finds most Tai speaking people.

In addition to Tai speaking people, there are Chinese who have blended seamlessly with the Thai. Other cultures include Malays, Mon, Khmer, and even Vietnamese.

Majority of Thais follow the Theravada Buddhist tradition, which ranges from animism to worshiping of ancestors. However, the Muslim community is also a big religious group in Thailand. The Muslim population is mostly prevalent in places south of Chumphon. The Malay group is present in the southern part of Thailand. In addition to these communities and groups, there is a sprinkling of Christians, Hindus, and Sikhs as well.

Based on their belief and main Buddhist tradition, Thai people pay a lot of respect and homage to their ancestors. It is the core of their spiritual belief and faith. They are very generous and hospitable people. Social hierarchy plays a very important role in their lives. They touch the feet of their elders as a mark of respect and to seek their blessing. The elders play a key role in any important decisions or ceremonies.

The modern Nation of Thailand is a multicultural society. The predominant Thai culture, identity and civilization emerged as a by product of the interaction of the indigenous population with Tai and other immigrant peoples . When people call themselves ‘’ Thai ’’ they mean they are in the political sense, subjects of the Thailand nation. If explored further the word has a cultural and, for many, a linguistic sense. However not all Thailand citizens speak Thai and of those who do so it is a second language for them. This Thai identity in its present form is relatively recent.

The first inhabitants are described in the Prehistory link. After prehistoric times there were the Mon, the Khmer and other Austro-Asiatic tribes such as the Lawa, H’ tin, etc. Their defining moments are up until 1300 and the arrival of the Tai tribes. The Khmer who established the Kingdom of Chenla and Angkor are described in East Thailand People although Khmer influence was significant elsewhere as well.

The Austro-Asiatic speakers including the Mon are considered in North Thailand People and Central Thailand People regions. The Mon had separate kingdoms in each region. The other Austro-Asiatic speaking tribes are considered but these were less significant. In North Thailand People we describe the smaller groups of Austro-Asiatic speakers such as the Lawa, H’ tin and other hunters and gathers of that region.

The Tai tribes are considered in the regions of Central Thailand, North Thailand, South or Southern Thailand and North East Thailand. These regions are relevant in that ethnic diversity is also varied through out the regions of Thailand. Modern Thailand is a modern political Nation now comprising what were historically numerous ethnic cultures and Kingdoms. The ethnic characteristics, belief systems, languages and lifestyles of each of all the tribes are compared also within these links. As between the Tai tribes the points of comparison are language and script, culture and art and architecture style. As between all the other ethnic tribes the points of comparison are language groups, monogamous and polygamous cultures, animist and non animist beliefs, ancestor worship or not, indic script or Khmer based text, highland dwellers or lowland farmers , heirarchical and non hierarchical societies, spirit beliefs and religion.

Thailand is a South Asian nation that lies in the east of Cambodia and Laos; Malaysia and Gulf of Thailand. Thailand is 49th largest country that can be compared to the size of California and France. In terms of economy, Thailand is a burgeoning industrial economy that has seen highest growth rate during the period of 1985 to 1996. Being an Asian country, Thailand culture is greatly influenced from China and India. The official language of Thailand is Thai and according to 2006 census its population is 62,828,706 with a density of 122km square. Major religion of Thailand is Buddhism. Given the natives who are not well educated, for foreigners, it is best opportunity to start off with a lucrative teaching career that helps in making a good living. Teaching English is one of the constant demands in Thailand. However, in the present scenario, the high demand of English teachers has resulted in the downfall of remuneration. Yet, teaching is the best job that an outsider can take course to in Thailand. Some other important sectors for livelihood include tourism and hospitality industry as Thailand attracts a large number of foreigners to its shores for its breathtaking locales and natural scenery. In case you are planning to live in Bangkok, Bangkok is known for its thriving international market with high rate of property.

Given the low cost of labor and affordable housing sector, many MNC are coming with their establishments in Bangkok. This phenomenon has led to large turnover of expatriates to Bangkok. Thailand’s attractive features of ownership laws, condominiums and apartments for foreigners make it the best choice for foreign investors. Bangkok real estate attracts both middle and higher class investors who are employed in the MNC sector. The high demand of MNC sector is churning large scale job opportunities for managerial and CEO posts. This has made Thailand a cosmopolitan nation that welcomes all its visitors with open arms. Well, if you are well educated and can speak English, you won’t find much difficulty in finding a suitable job. For skilled individuals, there is simply no dearth of jobs in Thailand as it is catering to a large numbers of skilled professionals. For foreigners, Thailand is a haven that offers tourism as well as employment facilities. The state policies towards foreign employment facilities make it a suitable destination for large number of workers who come from various parts of the world in the search of livelihood.

The new smoking ban in Thailand bars and restaurants is in effect and from what I have observed the law is being treated like any other law in Thailand. What I mean is, some establishments have already set up smoking areas, others say you have to smoke outside the restaurant or bar, and others are ignoring the law altogether. The reason for ignoring the ban could be that it will not really be enforced for a couple of months. Instead of stiff fines being issued, there will be warnings and education until the end of May, 2008.

I am currently visiting Khon Kaen, Thailand and go out almost nightly. I haven’t been to any bars but I have visited quite a few restaurants. One of my favorites, La Mai, has set up a smoking area near the restrooms. Smile restaurant allowed me to smoke at the table. And, Bu-Sa-Ba restaurant has a small, covered smoking area in the rear of the restaurant. I am not sure how the major tourist areas, Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket, are going to respond or what the impact on tourism will be. I would guess that starting on June 1, 2008, there will be a crackdown to show people that the government is serious about the ban. So, if you are planning to visit the Land of Smiles, and you smoke cigarettes, make sure to ask if it is OK to smoke before you light up. Otherwise, you may have to pay dearly.

Thailand has a pro-business market economy driven by strong foreign investments and export oriented manufacturing especially in electronics, foods and automobiles. Thailand’s exports account for 60% of the country’s GDP. Thailand experienced strong economic growth prior to the Asian economic crisis of 1997 with GDP growth averaging 9.4% annually. However, the crisis adversely affected businesses in Thailand and saw the value of the Thai Baht decline by more than 50% against the US dollar. Since the crisis, the economy has grown on a growth path. Thailand’s GDP was US$163.5 billion with a GDP per capita of US$2,537 in 2004. Thailand’s GDP grew by an average of 4.6% annually from 2000 to 2004 driven mainly by exports of high technology products mainly electronics. Inflation remained below 2.0% from 2000 to 2003 but increased to 2.8% by 2004. However, unemployment showed a declining trend from 3.6% in 2000 to 1.8% by 2004. Nearly 60% of Thailand’s workforce is involved in the agriculture industry but contributed to only 9.8% of the country’s GDP in 2004. The services industry contributed towards 46.1% of Thailand’s GDP and manufacturing 44.1% during the period. Major industries include tourism, electronics, textiles and garments, processed foods, beverages, agriculture produce, jewellery, furniture, plastics, vehicles and vehicle parts and mining of tungsten and tin. Major agriculture products include rice, tapioca, rubber, corn, sugarcane, coconuts, soybean and milk.

My Thai, Direct Importers celebrates 3 year anniversary milestone. Wilmington, DE—May 1, 2003–My Thai, General Partnership, a Delaware based direct importer which started operations May 1, 2000, offers quality handcrafted products Made-in-Thailand at affordable direct imported tax free Delaware prices. The style of My Thai’s hand woven silks, accessories, jewelry, handicrafts and gift items is an expression of both Traditional Thai Classical Crafts and modern innovative handmade items. Whether you have $2 or $200 in your pocket, enter My Thai’s 1000 square foot modernized Trolley Square showroom and you’ll be able to find something truly unique. Starting from a card table and suitcase based in a 1 bedroom apartment 4 years ago My Thai was founded by Thai native and recent immigrant Uthairat Nunthaponpisut (26 years old at the time) and her American husband. With little business experience, no retail experience, o credit rating and no money My Thai started as a dream that various business consultants and non-profit community development counselors predicted less than a 10% chance of making through its first year in business. What those inaccurate predictions failed to account for was that for everything My Thai lacked it was compensated for by a surplus of vision, love and sheer determination. Convincing relatives to front $30,000 in cash and co-sign a lease My Thai has gone from $0 to grossing just under $200,000 since opening for business. Debt free and profitable My Thai has defied the odds in the post 9/11 economy. My Thai’s success can be attributed to hand picked reasonably priced quality Traditional Thai Handicrafts, a Traditional American “Mom & Pop Store” business model and innovative, sometimes downright guerilla marketing tactics. My Thai is continuously campaigning online, via print, flyers, newsletters, community fairs, direct mail, PR, anything and everything, but more than anything else by word of mouth. My Thai simultaneously represents the balance of respect/beauty of Thai Culture and the fiercely Independent spirit of the American Dream. My Thai owner and Generel Partner Uthairat Nunthaponpisut. Wilson was named a 2001 International Who’s Who Business & Professional Woman Honoree by The American Biographical Institute, Raleigh, NC. Honorees were chosen for making significant contributions to society. Uthairat was chosen for selecting alternative women made Thai products to resale in USA & working with women’s groups in Thailand such as the BanHun’s Village Housewife Weaving Association in rural Issan, Thailand to create an export market for their hand woven products thus reviving Delaware’s lost Thai Silk importing heritage first started by Jim Thompson a Delaware native after World War II.

English is the official language of ASEAN – The Association of South East Asian Nations. It is the language of international business and now it is the main language of the internet. This means that in Thailand there is a big demand for native English speakers to teach all age groups how to speak, read and write the English language. Coupled with that is the ever growing tourism industry and the need for language skills amongst those who service it.

Although in the past the regulation of the teaching industry has been relaxed, the only real qualification being that you are a native speaker. This has now changed not only in Thailand but elsewhere. Employers will insist on a bachelor’s degree. Oddly this is more important than either a specialized TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or a TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certificate. The subject of the BA is not important but it must be genuine. Anyone caught using forged qualifications are now subject to law and employers will run checks with issuing colleges and universities from which the qualifications were awarded. If you are qualified then teaching can be a great way to get really involved with Thai society. ‘Sanuk’ or the importance having fun is a defining factor in social interaction. It may not always be easy, but teaching can be a rewarding and interesting experience.

When looking for work you have to decide whether you prefer to teach adults or children and what sector of the industry you want to cater to. International schools follow the curriculum of the country to which they are affiliated whether that is the UK, US or France. Teachers there would be qualified in the same way as they would in their country of origin so these jobs are in high demand since the pay is very good and employers can be very choosy.

All over Thailand there are private schools some being part of a chain whilst others are totally independent commercial enterprises. They range vastly in quality, the better ones having the pick of those they want to employ. This is another reason why being properly qualified is important. You will be paid more. There is also a great need for teachers at high schools. The pay can be quite low but generally it is a less stressful job since class times are shorter.

Often considered the most prestigious places to teach are universities. The pay is not always as high as the prestige might suggest since rates are set by the government but there is plenty of opportunity for specialization if you already have an academic background.

Private one to one teaching is a market in itself. Some teachers hate it finding it very demanding, others prefer the freedom in hours and the more intense nature of the work. It can also be a bit more lucrative than teaching a class. People will want value for their money though from the one to one experience, so professionalism and preparation are vital.

Some teachers prefer dealing with adult students and some prefer children. It’s just a question of preference. With adults many experienced teachers specialize in one area whether that is business English, medical English, tourist industry English and so on. Thailand is a country where appearance, respect and face matter. The profession of teacher or ‘kru’ or ‘ajarn’ is highly respected and certain levels of presentation are required. From men a shirt and tie at least and for women fairly formal clothing.

Teaching jobs are advertised in the Bangkok Post and increasingly on the internet.

Whatever your training and however long you plan to make a life in teaching Thailand can be an enjoyable place to do it. Teaching those keen to learn who also want to have fun is a rewarding experience.

The exact date muay Thai kick boxing was started is hard to narrow down, but it does date back all the way to medieval times. King Nareasen made it famous in 1560 AD when he was given a chance to fight for his freedom. King Nareasan was victorious, freed, and returned home where he declared the fighting style (then called Siamese style boxing) a national sport.

The art of muay thai kick boxing is known as both a hard martial art and as “the deadly art.” Muay thai kick boxing is a self defence art developed in Thailand and it enjoys immense popularity in many south-Asian countries as well. There is a wide variety of forms and styles, just like other styles of martial arts.

Muay thai kick boxing is the national sport of only Thailand, though it has become popular in many other countries. The main point that separates muay thai kick boxing from western developed boxing is the fact you are allowed to use shins, knees, elbows and fists. The fighter is able to use 8 parts of his body to strike his opponent.

About 50 years ago, boxing gloves where introduced – before this it was more common to bond smashed shards of glass to a rope binding around the hands. This practice was ended when international muay thai kick boxing tournaments began. This ultimate full-contact martial art, builds stamina and mental toughness. In Thailand, every boy is mandated to learn muay thai and most girls will learn at least some basic moves.

Muay thai kick boxing is designed to be performed unarmed, as every move can be done with combinations of eight body parts. Unlike other forms of martial arts where grappling is done on the floor, the grappling done in muay thai kick boxing is done while standing. The most common techniques used while grappling are attempts to hit the opponent’s stomach or head with the knees. Muay thai kick boxing appears as an extremely violent form of martial arts. Contrary to how it appears, it actually provides you with anger control and a constant strive for peace and unity.
