Thailand has long been popular and famous for its gorgeous iridescent silk. The art of making silk originated in northeastern Thailand, where cloth weaving is a traditional craft. The people from northeast rear their own silkworms, spin and dye the yarn to make bolts of silk which are sold world over.

Thai Silk Products are known world over for its finest quality and strength. Natural fabric lovers across the world prefer Thai silk as against any other option. Silk has its own charm; the Chinese Emperor wore and used it to symbolize his royalty and wealth. Almost 5,000 years ago, silk emerged in the Yellow River valley in China. For more than two thousand years the Chinese kept the secret of silk close to themselves.

Thailand is a world famous tourism center; the main source of livelihood is tourism and agriculture. However, the agriculture is at a declining note and the families are barely able to survive. Thai people are used to working for long hours under the scorching heat; this habit of hardworking and dedication has made Thai people as one of the best silk producers in the world. Thai Silk Products are now one of the main attractions for the tourists visiting Thailand from across the world.

Isan region in Thailand is especially known for its silk production. A number of family run factories are established in this region that employs locals for their silk production activities. With poor rewards from tireless efforts in the paddy fields, the people of Isan have adapted their skills to silk production and other activities. As a result of these efforts Isan is now the center of Thai silk manufacturing including a wide range of Thai Silk Products.

The silk produced in the region is of the finest quality and is suitable for making any kind of silk product. The silk products in Thailand are available in a wide range such as ladies wear, silk pyjamas, sarong, neck scarf, beach accessories, shoulder bag, mobile phone bags, hand stitched purse, cushions, massage bed and more. Thai Silk has become one of the major attractions for the tourists and it is believed that one who visits Thailand would definitely purchase some or the other silk product manufactured in Thailand.

Usually tourists are afraid of eating pavement food in Thailand. However, if the stall is clean, you should not hesitate to try out some house specialties. In fact, the best and most authentic dishes of Thailand can be tasted at pavement stalls. The basic Thai meal has rice, soup, a steamed dish, fried dish, fruit and salad. You will get the same food even at a stall along the pavements and it will be lip smackingly delicious! The dishes are all served at once and there is no particular order in which to eat. The locals eat the food with a fork and spoon. The fork is used for pushing the food into the spoon. They have soup all through the meal. Salt and pepper is hardly on the tables, but they have ‘phrik nam pla’, which is a fish sauce with added lime juice. This sauce is always served with meals.

The spices used in Thai cuisine are usually garlic and coriander. These are the basic spices used in Thai cooking. Then comes salt and pepper followed by chilies. The cook can add any spice which he may think will enhance the flavor of the dish. The salads of Thailand are not at all similar to western salads. Thai salads include cabbage, raw vegetables and cucumber pieces. The country has many regions and every region has its own specialty. In places like Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai, you can have unique dishes like fried grasshopper and field rat. Of course, it would require a strong disposition and stomach. In Isram, the food is in Laos style and you can get food like fermented black crabs with sticky rice and also the papaya salad. If you go down along the Malaysian border, you can have the hot and spicy curries. The dishes have cashew nuts and also coconut milk. You can drink anything you want along with Thai food. Beer and whiskey are preferred by the locals though.

Thailand is known for many things, wonderful beaches, great sightseeing, fantastic nightlife and smiling happy people! But did you know, it also produces some of the world’s finest table wines, which have both been recognised and exported around the world. This week we focus on one particular wine producer, Chateau De Loei, which is located in the stunning beautiful North Eastern province of the same name, Loei, near to the border with Laos.

Loei is a part of the country which is very different from most other parts of Thailand. Phu Ruea National Park has one of the highest peaks in the country and because of its height, the temperatures and the cooler climate of the area; conditions are very conducive to the cultivating and producing of fruits, vegetables and flowers, not normally found in this part of the world.

In fact, throughout Loei and in other neighbouring provinces, there are many attractions that can be visited to see this unique produce which includes strawberries, chinese pears, African Violets, Petunias and of course the vital ingredient for wine making is of course grapes, which grow here in abundance. The whole wine producing process takes place at the Vineyard, and tours are arranged for people to visit, see and taste the produce and even buy some to take away and enjoy. The fine Chenin Blanc and Syrah grapes are grown here and using French bottling equipment, the wine is produced and bottled, for local and export markets.

Credit for Chateau De Loei’s product success is partly given to the research undertaken by His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who found that the Phuruea climate, soil and water supply are ideal for the ‘best grape harvest’ that takes place in February and produces the best quality grapes for wine producing at that time. The fine wines that are produced are fruit based wines, suiting different culinary experiences, Chateau De Loei produces three types of white (Chenin Blanc) and, two reds (Syrah) and one rose (Syrah) all with very distinct flavours and tastes suiting each individuals palette.

Thailand has indeed come a long way most especially in its export aspect. In fact, Thailand is considered as one of the world’s largest producer of rice. Aside from Vietnam and Japan, Thailand caters to most of the rice demand worldwide. Since Thailand is an agricultural nation, most of the products that it exports are agricultural products. However, for the past years, Thailand shifted to manufacturing such that the products that it exports to other countries now include garments, textiles, jewelry, computer and components, integrated circuits, plastic products, toys, automobiles, and electrical appliances. The list just seems to go on. Indeed, Thailand has established itself in the world wide market.

On the other hand, there are also a number of commodities that Thailand is short of. Thus, Thailand relies on imports for these commodities. While Thailand has been closely linking with its neighboring Asian countries, there are some imports from the United States and Europe as well, with the United States as their number one importer. Basically, the main imports from the United States include computer accessories, petroleum products, telecommunications equipment, semiconductors, industrial machines, plastic materials, measuring, testing and control instruments, and certain chemicals. The United States alone allocate around $8 million dollars of imported products to Thailand.

Today, Thailand functions as the anchor economy for its neighboring countries such as Burma, Laos, and Cambodia. It is certainly worth knowing that after the economic fall down of Thailand in 1998, this nation was able to recover because of its exports. This certainly proves that exports boost up a country’s economy for as long as proper measures are geared toward its realization. Thailand has indeed placed itself in the global map with regard to exports. With this, Thailand is regarded as the number one exporter of rice, chilled fish and prawns, and rubber. Moreover, it is also the world’s third largest exporter of integrated circuits and hard disks. Correspondingly, Thailand is also the largest exporter of canned products such as tuna and pineapple. Furthermore, it is also the largest exporter of precious stones. Finally, Thailand ranks second largest exporter of tapioca products and sugar.

Everywhere is beautiful on Phuket Island but the south part of the island is straight out of a tropical daydream. The southern beaches offer some of the most glorious sun sets in the world

Phuket’s beaches have the powdery sand, blue-green water, casuarinas trees, palm trees and strutting mynah birds, yet each is unique and each satisfies a different kind of traveller. Most of the beaches are located on the west coast of the island. The greatest concentration of shops, hotels, and restaurants are located around Patong.

The night market offers products such as silk, sarongs, handicrafts scarves, beach and leisure wear, leather goods and luggage, computer games CD’s, and electronic gadgets. The main night market is easily found, it extends all the way down the Beach Road and is on all nights of the week. Every thing that is available lines the streets in brightly lit stalls. Another night markets is Along Raj-Uthid Road, merchandise includes recycled jeans, clothes, funky shoes, Thai sweets, orchids, ornaments and hair accessories.

Patong is the centre of the island’s night life scene. Bars in Patong can be divided into go-go, beer bars, bars and regular bars. The road around Bangla road is only about half a kilometre and is pedestrianised in the evening making it easy to walk around and bar hop.

Pool and Sports Bars will show live sports matches from around the world. Go-go Bars are where girls dance on stage wearing nothing more than a bikini, or even less. The girls can spend time with the customers when they are not on stage and, the girls can have lady drinks bought for them and are available for take-out. Prices for bar fines and drinks are higher than in beer bars. Beer Bars are usually a small bar with a few stools. You can have a beer and play games or chat with the ladies working in the bar. If you like the girl and enjoy her company you can buy her a drink for which she earns some commission.

Many people arriving in Thailand are doing so as part of a world tour, and this will be just one stop on their journey. They will often be trying to budget their money and the great news is that there is plenty of opportunity for discount travel. Thailand is a relatively cheap country if you are prepared to eat local food and don’t party too hard. If you know where to look, you will also see opportunities to receive discounts on many activities and trips.

The first place you will need to look for discounts is in the free local tourist magazines. These are available in almost all of the popular locations. They not only provide a useful guide to whatever area you are staying with maps and places to see, but they almost always are full of vouchers and special offers. If you want to party on a budget you will find all the places that offer happy hours, or other discounted drinks. You can also find special deals on meals and all the prominent tourist attractions. In places like Pattaya you can get special deals which mean that you can visit a few of the local attractions for at a cheaper rate as part of a package.

If you know how to haggle then you can really get things cheaper in Thailand. Be warned though, it is only really appropriate to haggle in markets where the prices are not in display. If you go into your local Tesco Supermarket and try to haggle they might call security. The night market in Chiang Mai is a great place to haggle and get a discount. Here you will find plenty of local crafts and souvenirs. It is possible to bargain sellers down to up to fifty percent of the original asking price.

If you are looking for discount flights and tours then the place to go to is the Khao San Road in Bangkok. This is the most popular tourist are in the city and is full of travel agencies all competing for your business for tours within Thailand and elsewhere in the region. If you have the time to shop around you will find some great bargains so don’t accept the first price that you are offered. These days the best place for bargains for Thailand and elsewhere in the world is on the internet. Hotels and even guest houses will offer a special discounted rate if you book online. You will also find that the cheapest flight deals are available online. If you arrive in a tourist area it is often advisable to book your room from a local internet cafe rather than the hotel itself.

The history of the export of Thai silk during the twentieth century has been one of great ups and downs, and is often clouded by inaccurate of nonexistent data. For instance, export figures for finished silk do no exist until the post-war years, but earlier data concerning export of raw silk will suffice to illustrate the industry’s plunges. While in 1990, raw silk worth 141,468 baht was exported, in the 1930′s this figure fell to less than 500 baht. Similarly, the export of Thai silk has undergone similar fluctuations since it began to figure prominently around 1950, when half a million baht was earned in foreign export.

During the 1950′s, Thai silk followed a rather steady upswing and then leaped in the early 1960′s into the 20 to 30 million baht per year rang. This can be attributed to promotion of the fabric by Her Majesty the Queen, who included dresses fashioned of Thai silk in her world tour wardrobe in 1961. By the following year, 1962, export of Thai silk was earning 26.6 million baht per year. This figure further increased in 1963 to 34 million baht, a gigantic leap from the figures of the 50′s -all considerably below ten million baht.

Apart from earning much-needed foreign exchange for the country and aiding in decreasing Thailand’s overall trade deficit, the export of Thai silk figures prominently in other areas. It is, for instance, instrumental in the development of the underdeveloped and underemployed Northern region, where very limited sericultural techniques and little marketing knowledge are gradually being eradicated by technical programs and instructional aid. The growing demand for Thai silk throughout the world can not help but improve the methods and lives of the individual growers and weavers throughout Thailand.

Undoubtedly one of the most stunning and unique textile products available in the world, it has been said the Thai silk is one of Thailand’s most effective ambassadors of goodwill abroad. Carried by most of the leading department stores in America and Europe, and gaining acceptance in other areas of the world, Thai silk implants the name Thailand in the minds of those who choose to wear it and women in over 50 countries of the world correctly do. It also introduces the country itself in the great fashion centers of the world, since leading designers – including Pierre Balmain and Elizabeth Arden- feature it in their collections.

With the efforts of the Government, including the Silk Promotion Committee, and the great strides being made at sericultural research centers such as the one at Korat, improved worm strains and eradication of disease do indeed point to a bright future for the export of Thai silk. As tourism is now the number two industry in Thailand, the “invisible export” of the approximately 180 million baht worth of Thai silk bought annually by tourists must not be neglected either. All these factors combined indicate a sound future for the industry, increased earnings for the nation, the enhancement of the Thai reputation world-wide,- and perhaps most important of all – the economic development of the underprivileged Northern and improved standard of living for the tens of thousands involved in sericulture throughout the region.
